The village is located in terraced hamlets within a natural circus between the 2 rocks. The existence of many megaliths confirms that Vergisson hold its name from the Celtic “verg” meaning stopes.
The Vergisson rock, peaking at 485 meters, is the twin sister of the Solutré rock. It leads us to guess that the first inhabitants were already admiring the sumptuous landscape that surrounds the Mâconnais and the Saône valley.
Although its geological root is similar to the one of Solutré, Vergisson owns very different microclimate and topography. As far as archaeology is concerned, Vergisson has many deposits (dolmens, menhirs) both from the Neolithic era, and from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Moreover, the presence of Neanderthal men 55.000 years ago was proven thanks to the Tanières’ cave. All these remarkable features led to the attribution of the label Grand Site de France by the French government in May 2013.
