Chaintré gets its name from the old Roman House « Cantriaca », which was located on the Via Agrippa that led to Lyon.
Chaintré is known for its wonderful hillside located above the Saône plain. The village, on the crest, benefits from a panoramic sight on the Bresse plains, and far in the distance, on the Bugey area and the Alps. A couple of castle, especially the Château de Chaintré, witness the local history’s richness. Chaintré is at the very Southern part of the appellation: its soils are highly diverse, from the Eastern sides’ clay to the limestone of the slopes oriented to the latest sunset.
